As a bookseller one of my main goals is getting the best used books I possibly can. A good way is to get these books is buying whole collections it can either be poetry, art or science fiction Australiana books. Its a delight to find collections, most of the good books I get come from these collections. The subject can anything that someone has spent years finding and gathering & acquiring little by little books from near & far to add to their collection.
Its Easy but you only get what you pay for
Now on the surface collecting these books sounds easy but you have to spend a lot of time, firstly building a reputation then figuring out the worth of the books you want to buy. whether you cheery pick just the best books or buy the entire collection. Then after that you have to protect and pack the books you’ve brought. (I will write another story about this latter.)
Gathering & Dispersing
In some ways that’s what I do but instead of hoarding them I generally put them online for keen collectors in their chosen fields to add to their own collection & so the collection and saving, enjoying then finally passing them on to the next generation to enjoy once again. Its just a cycle of life for the books the authors & to some extent the book collector being the middle man, aside from the money I enjoy meeting the people that part with those books treasured items hearing the stories & then meeting the new collectors that have just found their treasures anew & in doing this I sometimes make a buck.
